Abstract 摘要

Shock wave is a fundamental phenomenon in fluid dynamics. However, description of the shock wave structure is a highly nontrival problem in the gas kinetic theory. In this talk, I will focus on the application of moment methods in solving shock structures. In a seminal paper by Holway [Phys. Fluids 7(6), 911-913 (1965)], the author proposed an upper bound of the Mach number for which the moment method can be applied to find the shock structure. However, thirty-one years later, Weiss wrote some comments on Holway's paper [Phys. Fluids 8(6), 1689-1690 (1996)], arguing that such an upper bound shouldn't exist. Who gave the correct argument? What other difficulties will we meet when solving shock structures using moment methods? What improvement can we make using the latest techniques? Is there any hope to solve shock structure using a large moment system? All these questions will be discussed in this talk.
