Abstract 摘要

Population heterogeneity is ubiquitous in research areas such as population dynamics, mathematical epidemiology and data analysis in public health. It has been widely studied in the area of mathematical epidemiology. In this talk, I will briefly introduce the formulation, analysis and simulation of mathematical

models to describe the interplay between population heterogeneity and the spread of infectious diseases. To be specific, I will focus on two topics:

How population heterogeneity will affect the outbreak of an epidemic?

How population heterogeneity will affect the level of herd immunity?

Besides the discussions, I will shortly introduce my research experience and propose some interesting research topics in mathematical epidemiology and stochastic modeling.

Speaker Biography 讲者简介

Dr. Fan Bai’s research interests include the general problems in population dynamics and mathematical epidemiology, stochastic processes and data-driven modeling. He obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Unviersity of British Columbia, under the supervision of Dr. Fred Brauer. After graduation, he was trained as a bio-mathematician in Texas and Tennessee under the guidance of Dr. Linda Allen. He then moved to University of Bonn and Hausdorff Center for Mathematics in Bonn, Germany to perform research in the areas of Mathematical Biology and stochastic modeling. Dr. Bai joined the Division of Science and Technology (Applied Mathematics Program) at BNU- HKBU United International College as an assistant professor in 2022.
